Karen Bender
Karen Bender is a contemporary visual artist specializing in highly detailed pen and ink drawings that capture the spirit and realism of people, pets and wildlife. Based in Ohio, Bender utilizes intricate line work and precise hatching techniques to bring texture, contrast and emotion to her subjects.
Driven by a passion for authentic connection to both the past and present, Bender focuses on the nuances of posture and expression; whether it's the movement and joy of a child at play or the penetrating gaze of an animal who seems to be studying the viewer just as much as being studied itself. This meticulous approach to her work turns every piece into an intimate portrayal of both the familiar and the sublime aspects of life,
Bender began her professional art career over 25 years ago first as a designer and educator then as a fine artist. A graduate of Mount. St. Joseph University, she has exhibited her work in local and regional galleries and online exhibitions. Today, her drawings are held in private collections across the United States.
Outside of the studio, Bender can be found photographing locals to be used as reference for future work and listening to art history podcasts.

What moves me most about Karen's work is it's duality. On the surface, the imagery feels familiar and accessible-home, nature, creature, nostalgia. But beneath that accessibility is depth. Subtle insight. A layered perspective that reveals itself slowly.
Her pen drawings are intricate without being indulgent. The detail serves meaning. The restraint of black and white sharpens the emotional impact rather than softens it. There is something both protective and exposing in her work, as if the subjects are being observed and understood at the same time.
